Featuring || Janelle of @myparisportraits

Hey! I'm Janelle, I'm a Kiwi photographer living in Paris. I started my business "My Paris Portraits" in April 2020, but have been photographing people in Paris through Airbnb experiences for 3 years.

I love so many things about France, but one thing I have discovered in the past few years is the diversity in landscape and nature throughout France. I did a van road trip earlier this year, and I was blown away by how much the landscape changed from vineyards, to mountains, to marshlands, to beach towns etc. France has everything, and it's incredibly beautiful!

01 Language || Coucou

My favourite French word is probably the greeting “coucou." You can use it when greeting a close friend, your partner, or children. It's a more familiar and casual way to say bonjour. I think it's such a cute way to say hi, and I also use it when I chat to ALL the cute Parisian dogs I pass every day!

02 Places || La Seine

My favourite place in Paris is la Seine. I grew up living by the beach, and although I love my life in Paris, the one thing I miss is living close to the seaside. So the Seine has become my serene place, the body of water that draws me in every day. I love walking it early in the morning, while Paris is still sleeping. And then again at dusk when Paris is alive! Having a rosé on the side of the river with dear friends, listening to street music and people watching, I really can't think of much better.

03 Food & Drink || Pain aux raisins

This may be the hardest question to answer ever, because France does THE BEST food. But at the moment my favourite French treat is a pain aux raisins. I love all pastisseries, and every few months my favourite tends to change. But at the moment that's what I'm loving. Two patisseries in my hood, Blé Sucre and Aux 2 Anges also do different variations that are always delish!

04 Arts & Culture || Les Intouchables

A French film that everyone should watch is "The Intouchables.” The story is absolutely beautiful. If you are wanting to practice your French by watching shows on Netflix then I would recommend Call my Agent (Dix pour cent) and Lupin.

05 Fun Fact || Paris Patisseries

It is no surprise that French people love their baguettes and patisseries. But you only really see just how much when you live here. In Paris alone there are more than 30,000 patisseries! A handy piece of advice, if you are ever cooking a meal for a French person make sure to always buy a baguette. No matter what you are eating, baguette goes along with every meal!
