French 5 | 05.28.21 (ft. Sophie of @sophiennenadeau)

Welcome to the 14th edition of French 5, where I share a glimpse of France through language, places, food and drink, arts and culture, as well as a random fun fact.

In this week’s edition, British/Canadian content creator Sophie shares what made her fall in love with Paris.

A big thank you to Sophie for participating in this interview and for sharing her beautiful photos. If you have any feedback or ideas of what you’d like to see or who should be featured, please leave your comment below.

Featuring || Sophie of @sophieannenadeau

Hi! Thanks for having me on the interview series :) My name is Sophie and I'm a British/ Canadian content creator who's currently based in Paris, where I've been for just under a year and a half. I arrived just before the current world events began so it's not really been the usual introduction to the city but I love it nonetheless! It's hard to pin down exactly about France, but I guess it's the culture, the people, the beautiful monuments, and the stunning landscapes.

01 Language || Flâner

I love the word “flâner.” It's a verb which means “to stroll” or “to wander” with no particular purpose other than to enjoy the landscape/ scenery. Paris is the ideal place to do this as there are always more people watching opportunities, especially if you wander around, sit out on the first café terrace that catches your eye with a coffee, and watch the world go by!

02 Place || Paris

I guess it's cliché but I really do love Paris. There's always new and interesting friends to make, new hidden gems to discover, and cool foodie spots to dine at. I first visited when I was 18 with my parents and chose my university course back in London, England so that I could spend a study abroad year in Paris. Anyway, I fell in love with the city and created my website to give me an online income so that I could move back after my studies and now I'm here!

03 Food & Drink || Rosé

I can never say no to a crisp glass of rosé! For the past year, what I've missed the most is going out with my close friends and gossiping over a glass of wine. Many people say that Provence produces the best rosé and I have to say that I definitely agree! There's nothing nicer than finishing a vacation day off after driving through the vineyards, visiting crumbling château ruins, and exploring medieval hilltop towns than sitting down on a terrace in the town you're staying in with a bottle of wine and surrounded by good friends.

04 Arts & Culture || Making time for the people you love

I guess a lot of my answers have alluded to this already, but it's honestly the habit of remembering to take the time to sit down and enjoy a coffee or glass of wine with friends and family. French culture is very much centred around making time for the people you love and I guess the terrace culture is a reflection of this. If there's one thing I've learned since coming here, it's that you should always make time for the people you care about and I think that the French are very good at doing this! I actually have a whole blog post on French habits you should steal.

05 Fun Fact || Women couldn’t wear trousers

I only discovered this recently, but until 2013, it was illegal for women to wear trousers! Of course, no one enforced this archaic law! However, it dated from 1892 and I was so surprised to discover that it was only abolished a few years ago. I recently wrote a post about other weird facts about France.
