Every so often, we try to make it out to Niagara-on-the-Lake for the day. Surrounded by wineries and stunning views of Lake Ontario, this historic town is much more charming than the nearby Niagara Falls. While a trip to the falls is well worth it, we would recommend skipping the shops there and heading to Niagara-on-the-Lake instead.
A stroll down the main street offers visitors plenty of opportunities for window shopping, ice cream eating, and wine tasting- all obviously important aspects of a successful summer day trip.
The lake is just a short walk from the main street and provides a great view of Fort Niagara on the American side, which was originally built by the French.
For history lovers like us, there's plenty to see too. This town started out as a British settlement in the late 1700's and played a pivotal role during the War of 1812. The buildings downtown are well-preserved and beautifully decorated with lush floral arrangements. There is a restored apothecary, which serves as a small, but informative pharmacy museum on the main street. And just down the road, sits Fort George, Upper Canada's stronghold during the War of 1812, which is also worth a visit if you have a few hours. (Photos of our visit to Fort George coming soon...)
